Education
From a young age, I have been fascinated by the complex circulations of the oceans, and especially the question of how they will evolve throughout the Anthropocene. This fascination led me to complete an MSci in Meteorology and Oceanography at the University of East Anglia (2016-2020).
Research Experience
Throughout my undergraduate degree, I have continually sought to diversify my research experience, both in academia and industry. In the summer of 2018, I undertook an internship with Hiscox Re, delivering an independent research project investigating the representation of storm surge in three U.S. hurricane catastrophe models. Throughout the subsequent academic year, I continued to grow my interest in numerical model simulations, utilising them, alongside ocean glider observations, in my third-year dissertation: 'On the positioning and dynamics of a tidal mixing front in the northern North Sea.' This research was awarded the 2019 Alan Preston Prize for outstanding work in oceanography. In the ensuing summer, I joined researchers at the Roland von Glasgow Air-Sea-Ice Chamber to investigate the influence of rainfall on the properties of sea ice. The key findings were included in a broader publication on the facility, which has since been submitted for review. During my final year of undergraduate studies, I specialised in the low-frequency variability of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) transport under the supervision of Prof. David Stevens and Prof. Karen Heywood. By utilising the U.K. Earth System Model (UKESM1), we showed that transport variability in the order of 12 Sv occurs in response to quasi-periodic deep convection in the Southern Ocean. I am currently refining the principal findings in preparation for future publication.
Outreach
Educating, mentoring, and inspiring others has remained an immovable constant throughout my entire academic life. In my view, there is little reason to acquire scientific knowledge unless it is to be shared with those around you. Over the past 7 years, I have taught students from KS2 to A-Level in science and mathematics, especially working to raise attainment for those students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Meanwhile, outside of the curriculum, I have designed and delivered outreach workshops on Weather Forecasting to A-Level science students. I am currently committed to becoming an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador, delivering workshops on how we can act at the international scale to address climate change.
