Rhiannon Ackland

Academic Profile

I am in receipt of the St Cross Graduate Scholarship in Environmental Research, which part funds my DPhil. I graduated with an MSci in Earth Sciences and BA in Natural Sciences from Selwyn College, University of Cambridge in 2023, receiving the Harkness Prize for achievement in Geology. My Masters research concerned the origin of Al-rich enstatite in arc magmas and was supervised by Prof Marie Edmonds. In Summer 2022 I did a Research Experience Placement with the Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Research (AI4ER) CDT, University of Cambridge, entitled ‘Mineralogical analysis of particular matter air pollution using machine learning’.

Current Research

My DPhil research will test a hypothesised mechanism of ore formation by percolative reactive flow in mushy magmatic systems. I will use a combination of experimental petrology, geodynamical modelling and fieldwork in the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. I am part of both the Experimental Petrology and FoaLab (geodynamics) research groups in the Earth Sciences department.
